Why another board game about money?
I yelled, picked up the boardgame, threw all the pieces across the room, and stormed out the backdoor into the desert.
It is embarassing to admit, but as a kid (and adult my wife says) I was ultra-competitive. I hated losing at anything and it wasn't unusual for me to get angry whenever I didn't win. One day my brothers and sister and I were all playing a game of Monopoly. The game had gone on for quite a while and I was close to winning. I just needed to convince one of my siblings to trade a land with me, but they were are too stubborn or conniving to give in. I wanted to win badly and so I started to get angry. Unfortunately, my dad walked in just as I let a few derogatory comments about my brother fly. I don't remember all that he said in the aftermath but I remember him ending with, "You have to stop being such a terrible sport or no one will play with you." I felt the rage rise and the resulting debacle above ensued. I ran out into the desert behind our house and hid behind a bunch of sage-brush, determined to stay there until my family was worried enough to come and find me. Unfortunately, the hot summer sun in Moab, Utah had another plan. I felt like I stayed out there for hours, but in realtime I was only gone about 15 minutes before I was melting. Finally, I slowly made my way back to the house, expecting everyone to welcome me back with open arms and an apology. Instead, I found them sitting in the same room still playing the game we had started; laughing and having fun without me.
For most of my life, I have disliked playing boardgames. As you can tell, they bring out a side of me that I don't like. However, a few years ago, as my kids started wanting to play games with me, I realized that board games were an amazing way to connect with my family and spend quality time together. So, I have tried to be better. It has been a true joy playing games with my kids, though I have to admit that I do occassionally still get into a sour mood when my 5 year old has destroyed me in UNO for the 5th time in a row.
Late last year, I was playing Monopoly Deal with my kids and thinking about the work we are doing at Wealth Mentality Families when I realized that there were not a lot of good games out there focused on building businesses, wealth, or money management. Monopoly has been around forever, but it is very limited in it's scope of what it includes. Cash Flow has also been around for a long time but it is very focused on teaching the importance of Real-Estate to help us escape the Rat Race. As I dug in and looked at different games and the lessons they teach, I realized that no one had come up with a fun game that would teach about entrepreneurship and wealth creation. Thus was born Startup Millionaire. Our goal was to create a game that was fun to play and taught principles of entrepreneurship along with the value of time, the importance of social media, and using money to create wealth. We hope you enjoy playing this game with your family again and again.

Our game arrived yesterday and we played it for family night. I'm so glad I purchased it at the homeschool conference in February.
